August is a wonderful time for harvests and for sowing seeds.
Sometimes it’s called a second spring, because of there being so many opportunities for starting plants to crop for a long time – in the autumn, then a little through winter, and even into next spring. Join me at Homeacres for a summer tour filmed on 13th August, where I share the joy of harvesting onions, beans, squash, chard, and more, plus tips for keeping beds full with successive plantings right into the cooler months.
You’ll see fresh sowings of mooli radish, endive, chicory for radicchio, kohlrabi, and cabbage, alongside summer harvests of Czar dry beans, Jolant leeks, and other crops. I’ll also share how no dig makes it easy to keep beds in constant production – no digging, no crop rotation worries, very little weeding, and soil that’s always ready for planting.
The garden is weed-free thanks to thorough mulching, and even bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), which was once abundant, is now almost gone – saving huge amounts of time.
In this tour, I cover:
- How to succession plant for year-round cropping
- Watering strategies in dry weather
- Interplanting and companion cropping ideas
- Protecting crops from flea beetles and caterpillars naturally
- How I use Bacillus thuringiensis (Dipel) and a magnetic water device
